LabEx EMC3

The Energy Materials and Clean Combustion Center or EMC3 is part of the laureate of the « Laboratoire d'Excellence » project call, an initiative of the French governement's Investment Program for the Future.

This research centre is the only one dedicated to Materials for Energy and Clean Combustion.

Supported by the CNRS, it joins 7 Norman laboratories:

  • 4 laboratories in Caen (CIMAP, CRISMAT, LCMT et LCS)
  • 2 laboratories in Rouen (CORIA, GPM)
  • 1 laboratory in Le Havre (LOMC)
Involving 700 researchers including more than 200 PhD student, the EMC3 activities focus in particular on materials for energy recovery, safety of nuclear installations,  development of new materials from eco-friendly methods and on the improvement of fuel,  combustion, exhaust gas decontamination and thermal energy recovery.

EMC3 is a multidisciplinary project in Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering, it promotes the emergence of new high-level and risky projects through a project hotel. Unique in Europe, its originality lies in the continuum from basic research to applied research and partnerships.

Supported by the internationally oriented competitive cluster  in the automotive industry: MOV’EO, EMC3 relies on technological research institutes such as the Norman Energy & Propulsion Systems Carnot Institute (Institut Carnot ESP) or the National Technological Research Centre in Materials (UMS-CNRT Matériaux).

With a € 13 millions fund and a strong commitment  from Higher Education Institutions and Public Research Organisation (CNRS, ENSICAEN, Université de Caen Basse-Normandie, CEA, INSA Rouen, Universités de Rouen et du Havre), LabEx EMC3 plays a lead role in Normandy for the Materials & Energy Research.
