Fraunhofer IOSB, Ettlingen
The Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technology and Image Exploitation is located in Ettlingen near Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg. (Fraunhofer FOM up to 1/1/2010.)
The four departments object recognition, optronics, signal technology and scene analysis carry out basic studies in the areas of warning sensors, the analysis and interpretation of image series and laser application.
Concepts, methods and systems are developed on this basis, which allow the institute to contribute its consulting competency in military applications.
Our country has undergone considerable political and social transition in the last two decades. This is also apparent in the institute’s work through the opening of its doors to civil applications.
Numerous ultra-modern devices from the field of electro-optical technology are available at the Ettlingen institute as a result of its work. For example, a broad selection of cameras is used at the institute, which span the entire wavelength spectrum from ultraviolet to long-wave infrared light.
This equipment is rented out by third parties (e.g. customers from industry) for trade fair campaigns together with the professional competency of our employees.
With its 130 employees (as of 2009), the Ettlingen institute is also capable of handling larger and fairly long-term projects.
We have expanded our international cooperation by partnering with renowned research institutes located abroad.
The former FOM managed to produce a large portion of its scientific results in the scope of innovative developments for industry, which are seen through until ready for application.
The Karlsruhe metropolitan area with its attractive research landscape offers the necessary environment for scientific exchange beyond the institute’s own areas of activity.
In this framework, graduate and doctoral projects are also assigned and lectureships are filled by scientists at the Ettlingen institute.
