Hochschule Niederrhein (HN)

The Hochschule Niederrhein is a renowned and attractive educational and research institute in the German university landscape. Innovative and international degree courses, intensive student support, studying with one finger on the pulse of practical applications as well as focusing on applied research and development are all reasons for enrolling at the university campuses in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach.

With its approximately 12,600 students the Hochschule Niederrhein is one of the four largest universities of applied science in Germany, and in North Rhine-Westphalia only the Cologne University of Applied Sciences is bigger. The HN is not only the largest educational institute in the Lower Rhine area, but also a sought-after contact for companies in the region when it comes to research and transfer.

When it was founded on 1 August 1971, three engineering colleges, eight technical colleges as well as a school of art and design were incorporated into the new "Fachhochschule Niederrhein". Of the original colleges the State College of Textile Engineering in Krefeld had the longest standing tradition and was founded in 1855. The Krefeld/Mönchengladbach area has remained a centre for the German textile industry and textile mechanical engineering until today. This tradition is now continued to an important degree in the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology.

The Hochschule Niederrhein regards itself as an educational institution that is anchored in the region with a national reach. It is spread across the three campuses Krefeld South, Krefeld West and Mönchengladbach. The Krefeld South Campus, which also houses the University Administration Offices, is home to the Faculties of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical and Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering as well as Health Care. The Faculties of Chemistry and Design are located at the Krefeld West Campus, while the Faculties of Food, Nutrition and Hospitality Sciences, Applied Social Sciences and Textile and Clothing Technology are in Mönchengladbach alongside the largest faculty of the University, the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics.

The more than 60 degree programmes are tailored to the needs of the region and also to changes in the labour market. Applicants can choose from over 40 Bachelor and more than 20 Master degree programmes. The career-integrated and dual degree programmes are also gaining in importance.

As part of the programmes Business Administration (B.A.), International Marketing (B.A. and M.A.), Mechatronics (B. Eng.) and Textile and Clothing Management (B. Sc.), students are offered the opportunity to obtain a double degree in cooperation with partner universities in France, Finland and China. In addition, students can also incorporate a Study Abroad Semester in their programmes at one of the 100 partner universities.
