University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven

In the last years, innovative developments have changed the region greatly. In particular, theelement water has established its position as a promising economic sector. University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven has responded to these changes and brings its maritime heritage with it.

The University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven was founded in 1975. Thanks to its predecessor institutions the Geestemünde Navigation College and the Municipal College the education tradition of the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven can be traced back to more than hundred years ago. Therefore, the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven distinguishes itself as the "university by the sea", not only because of its geographic location directly at the estuary of Weser, but mainly because of its 24 attractive study programmes.

Currently, there are about 3 000 students studying on the campus between the river Geeste and the pedestrian zone. University parties, pubs and a variety of leisure facilities make the student's life evenmore attractive. Architecturally appealing historical buildings and new buildings close to the water are the characteristics of the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven. At the backside of building K are the remnants of walls of the Castle Karlsburg built in 1672 which was used as emigration centre later on. The remnants are now integrated into walls of the new buildings. There is a tower room located inside which is often referred to as the "Beste Stube" which means the best room.

The combination of over 100 years’ of practice-oriented teaching experience and future-oriented research is also expressed in the innovative architecture of the University’s new buildings. Building T is a new building which was opened in the winter semester 2011/2012. There are altogether four storeys with an area of 2 500 m² used for classrooms, self-study rooms, a School Laboratory for pupils as well as an event hall which can hold 400 people combined with an auditorium for 135 people. However, also in other buildings around the historical Karlsburg the students can always experience short ways and vivacious campus life. Whether when you have coffee in the Student Cafe or a cosy meal in the cafeteria, which is also possible outside in the sun in summer, you can always meet your classmatesor professors there and have nice conversations with them during the breaks in between. In addition, the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven also has modern equipped institutes and laboratories, and moreover, it offers worldwide unique study programmes such as the Bachelor's programme CruiseTourism Management.

As shown in the result of university ranking over and over again, the study programmes have good reputation both nationally and internationally. Courses at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences focus on engineering and economics. The university cooperates closely with the business. It is not only manifested by their close dialogue during the degree thesis and research cooperation. The Master's programmes "Wind Energy" and "Integrated Safety and Security Management" are also impressive evidence. Finally, funds for the establishment of the study programmes come from regional companies which take the significance of the education into account and illustrate their connection with the university and its students in this way.
