The University which dates back to the XVIth century, has a comprehensive offering including 8 faculties, some 160 institutes and 8 Graduate Schools. With 15'900 students, it is of mid-range size among Swiss universities. Unlike the bigger institutions, it retains a human dimension and a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Research – Complete networking
Its academic and research organisation prides itself on its interdisciplinarity, exemplified by its Strategic Research Centers and its two National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCR): Trade Regulation and TransCure. Additionally it shares the MUST (experimental physics) with the ETH Zurich. The NCCR climate and the NCCR North-South have ended on March 31, 2013. The activities of both NCCRs will be continued by the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research and the Centre for Development and Environment CDE. Furthermore, the University is actively involved in a wide range of European and worldwide research projects, notably in the field of Space Research.
Continuing Education
Education doesn’t stop with the university degree. The Centre for University Continuing Education offers more than 50 courses of study, all of which are suitable for practising professionals. Master courses exclusive to the University of Bern include International Law and Economics (MILE), Business Administration Rochester-Bern (EMBA), Advanced Epidemiology and Cross-Cultural Business Practice.
