Associate Lecturer (Teaching) - History of Indigenous Art & Visual Cultures
About the role
The History of Art Department is seeking to appoint a full-time Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in the History of Indigenous Art & Visual Cultures to cover the research leave of a member of academic staff for two academic years from 1 September . The exact end date is dependent on the funding available but the contract is likely to last until July .
In the Autumn Term of /25 the Associate Lecturer will deliver a ‘ Thematic Seminar’ to first year and affiliate BA students. The Thematic Seminar is designed by the postholder based on the research interests of the appointed candidate and delivered predominantly in London collections, museums or historical sites. The Thematic Seminar is a small group class with approximately 12 first-year students.
In the Spring Term they will co-deliver ‘ Methodologies of Art History’ , a 15-credit core module for second year BA students which is co-taught with a member of academic staff and a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant. They will also convene the ‘Survey Course’, a core module which introduces first year BA students to key monuments and central issues in the discipline of art history from c. to the contemporary. The Survey course is supported by a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant and lectures are delivered by a range of colleagues from across the department.
In addition to these modules the postholder will teach a 30-credit special subject module to final year BA students on ‘ Colonial/Modern: Indigenous Art Past and Present’ to be delivered over both the Autumn and Spring terms.
The postholder will be asked to assist with marking and assessment for these and other modules and may be asked to mark and/or supervise a small number of BA and MA dissertations. They will act as Personal Tutor for a cohort of undergraduate students. They may be asked to contribute one-off lectures to core teaching at BA and/or MA level and to undertake an administrative office in the Department to support widening participation, outreach and admissions, to ensure that we attract the best students, regardless of background.
Rubrics for these modules are available in the job description, accessible at the bottom of this page. The teaching for /26 will likely be a similar configuration of modules and will be agreed in consultation with the postholder next year.
About you
The successful candidate may have expertise on the art and visual culture of an Indigenous people or peoples from any geography and time period or might research the art world’s engagement with Indigenous art and artists. We welcome scholars with expertise in decolonial theory, repatriation, and/or whose work challenges traditional ideas about “art” as a category. We encourage applications from candidates who are able to connect their areas of expertise to larger intellectual and methodological frameworks. Candidates should hold a PhD. Prior experience of teaching is essential.
