About the position

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant associate professor position in soil chemistry with emphasis on analytical methods relevant for sustainable soil management.

The successful applicant will join seventeen colleagues in the Soil and Water section, which is covering a broad field of earth sciences, i.e., soil science and plant nutrition, hydrology, limnology, and geology.

The soil science group studies biogeochemical and physical processes in soils in connection to land use and environmental changes and holds a broad portfolio of projects related to ecosystem services and sustainable development in Norway and globally. We are now looking for a person who will strengthen our profile, with expertise in soil and environmental chemistry and an interest for hands-on development of our soil science laboratory.

Main tasks

Based on the required expertise and experience outlined in this advert, the person to be employed will have the following main tasks:

  • Initiate and undertake research within the strategic goals of MINA
  • Develop courses and teach within the strategic priorities of MINA
  • Maintain and further develop the soil chemistry laboratory
  • Supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students
  • Participate in administrative duties
  • Provide other services to the university, profession and society

Competence

Required Academic qualifications.

  • PhD with focus on soil chemistry, biogeochemistry, or environmental chemistry
  • Documented teaching competence
  • Experience with applied environmental or agricultural research
  • Experience with relevant laboratory procedures, methods and analysis in soil chemistry and knowledge of recent technological development within the field
  • A documented record of relevant scientific publications

The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:

  • Ability to initiate, secure funding and carry out research projects.
  • International collaboration and network
  • Experience with supervision at university level
  • Experience with outreach and dissemination
  • Experience from interdisciplinary research
  • Knowledge of Norwegian and EU soil and environmental policies
  • Scandinavian language proficiency enabling you to teach in Norwegian within two years after the appointment

You need to:

  • Have a clear vision for future research and teaching at NMBU in collaboration with colleagues
  • Have good communication skills, ability to establish new contacts and develop networks
  • Have high working capacity, as well as interest and ability to work in teams
  • Have ability to create a welcoming and productive working environment for colleagues and students
  • Thrive in a multidisciplinary and international campus environment

Personal suitability will be given weight.

Required for a position as associate professor:

  • Documented educational competence using a “teaching portfolio” with a description of;
    • Pedagogic qualifications, completed programme of at least 200 hours
    • Teaching and supervision experience including breadth and variation in topics
    • Basic teaching skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision

Those who do not meet the pedagogic requirements for employment are required to meet them within two years of employment.

Remuneration and further information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1011 Associate Professor, wage framework 24, salary grade (68-84) (NOK 667 700 - 966 300), depending on qualifications. Seniority Promotion in position.
