FPGA / High-Speed Electronics Research Engineer

Publicerad 2024-09-30

Toshiba Europe Ltd have been at the forefront of R&D in quantum technology, particularly quantum communications and quantum key distribution (QKD) for the past two decades. During this time they have made many breakthroughs, such as record high quantum communication bit rates, operation over international-length-scale fibres and classical-quantum network integration. Alongside advancements to quantum and optical technologies, these breakthroughs have hinged on many innovations in high-speed electronics, including the development of high-performance PCBs & FPGA firmware tailored for driving GHz-clocked quantum transmitters and receivers. Recently, Toshiba launched a new business unit to commercialise R&D outcomes and Toshiba QKD systems are now deployed in telecommunication networks across the world.

We invite applications for a Research Engineer position at the Cambridge Research Laboratory, working in the area of FPGA firmware / high-speed electronics to develop next-generation quantum communication systems with significantly enhanced performance. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team and take a lead role in the design and implementation of the programmable logic and PCBs at the heart of our systems. Outcomes will include the demonstration of new quantum technologies, which will be published in leading academic journals and presented at international conferences, as well as supporting Toshiba’s QKD product development.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect FPGA firmware to integrate into complete quantum communication systems
  • Implement FPGA code to drive optical components (at GHz speeds) and perform high-speed processing
  • Design and layout of new RF PCBs
  • Work closely with Research Scientists and Optical Engineers to test and evaluate prototypes
  • Writing scientific reports and design documentation

Skills & Experience - Essential:

  • Degree level qualification in Electronic Engineering or equivalent subject
  • FPGA development experience in VHDL/Verilog, including use of off-the-shelf IP blocks as well as writing new blocks
  • Ability to read and understand circuit diagrams
  • Experience working in RF & mixed signal electronic circuit design
  • Experience of testing and debugging FPGA firmware and PCBs
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal

Skills & Experience - Desirable:

  • Knowledge and experience of quantum technologies, especially QKD and single-photon counting
  • Understanding of optical communications, networking and/or cryptography
  • Competence in one or more software programming languages
