With more than 1,500 personnel spread along the French coastline in more than 20 sites, the Institute explores the 3 great oceans: the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A leader in ocean science, IFREMER is managing the French Oceanographic Fleet and its dedicated scientists create ground-breaking technology to push the boundaries of ocean exploration and knowledge, from the abyss to the atmosphere-ocean interface.

General Areas of Responsibility

The position will strengthen the capacity of the Institute to understand and forecast ocean change, as part of the Institute’s research agenda, and in particular challenge 3 related to multi-impact and multi-scale forecasting of marine socio-ecosystems. It will also support implementation of the first research theme of AMURE's scientific project, entitled "Development and sustainability of maritime activities". Research under this theme addresses the conditions for the emergence and sustainability of the "blue economy". It focuses on the economic and legal factors conditioning the development and future trajectories of maritime activities, and adaptations of companies, sectors, communities and territories to change, and to the requirements associated with ecological transitions. The disciplinary fields involved are industrial economics, sectoral studies, regional macro-economics and the economics of local development.

The position will also contribute to the work carried out under the third theme of AMURE’s scientific project, the aim of which is to combine knowledge of the dynamics of marine and coastal ecosystems and their interactions with human activities, to build assessment and forecasting approaches and tools for the analysis of maritime and coastal development and planning strategies, in support of collective choices. The disciplinary fields involved include ecological economics and methods for including environmental dimensions in economic accounts, such as ecosystem accounts or satellite accounts.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Analyse the dynamics of major activity sectors related to the sea (tourism, exploitation of energy and mineral resources, ports and transport, etc.); study the factors influencing these dynamics, and the interactions between sectors.
  • Assess their regional and local economic impacts in an integrated manner and taking into account ecological impacts.
  • Contribute to the monitoring of the national (French Maritime Economic Data) and European maritime economy.
  • Contribute to expert appraisals relating to the major directives of the Integrated Maritime Policy (MSFD, Maritime Planning, ...).
  • Analyse public policies directly or indirectly related to the maritime economy.
  • Actively contribute to the scientific production and dissemination of research results (via rank A publications).
  • Collaborate with other researchers and engineers, and mentor technicians, trainees, doctoral and post-doctoral students.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Characteristics

  • Ph.D./post-doctoral student in industrial economics, macroeconomics or geographical economics.
  • Post PhD experience in Applied Research.
  • Multidisciplinary research experience.
  • Knowledge of European and French sectors and public policies, particularly in the maritime field.
  • Economic intelligence and implementation of methods for collecting economic information (especially in emerging sectors).
  • Skills in statistics and sectoral data processing.
  • Experience in quantitative research in industrial economics, macroeconomics, environmental accounting and/or geographical economics.
  • Fluency in English.
