The role

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute fully to high-quality and research-led teaching within the Department of History. They will have a track record of teaching history at undergraduate level and will take up the post on 1 September 2024.


What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will be actively engaged in scholarship in the history of the British Empire and will have experience of research-led teaching in this field. They will be expected to contribute to the provision of team-taught units reflecting this field of research, including HIST30120 Britain’s Long Nineteenth Century, 1789-1914 and HIST20116 Decolonisation. A specialism in the history of the British Empire in Asia would be desirable. The successful candidate may be asked to teach seminars or deliver lecturers on HIST20143 Asia in Global Perspective.

The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise undergraduate dissertations, act as personal tutor, to undertake other teaching and administrative duties as appropriate, and to remain engaged in scholarship to support research-led teaching.


You should apply if
  • You have completed a PhD in history by the end of August 2024. You may have a track record in research publication.
  • You have a proven track record in the teaching of history at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, and potentially also of teaching other units related to your specialism. You have completed an HEA-accredited teaching qualification or have clear plans to do so. You have demonstrated clear potential to achieve excellence in delivering research-led and research-informed teaching in your field.
