The Role

 

The Economics Group within Newcastle University Business School has over 35 full-time research and teaching staff. We are a collegiate and generalist group. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality, and we attract highly qualified students to our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

 

The Group hosts a vibrant research community that promotes research around all areas of economics, especially in the following sub-themes:

  • Applied Time Series Econometrics
  • Behavioural and Experimental Economics
  • Economics of Safety, Health, Environment and Risk
  • Finance, Financial Economics and Financial Econometrics
  • Labour, Health, Education and Development Economics
  • Macroeconomics, Policies and Institutions in Open Economic Systems
  • Spatial, Urban, Regional, International and Industrial Economics

 

Group members have active funded projects in a range of areas including the Creative Industries and their internationalisation, Education, Development, Energy, Environmental, and Rural Economics. The Group also hosts a state-of-the-art Behavioural Research Laboratory.

 

The Group is expanding at pace and has recently appointed several lecturers, a reader and a named chair. We now have a further fixed-term lecturer position (teaching & scholarship) and we invite applications from strong candidates, committed to collegiality.

 

Candidates will hold, or be close to obtaining, a relevant PhD and will be able to demonstrate the ability to teach economics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

This is a full time, fixed term post available until 31st May 2025.

Key Accountabilities

Teaching & Learning

  • To provide high quality teaching and learning and student support
  • Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of personal tutor
  • Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with University standards and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks
  • Contribute to curriculum development
  • Ensure all our students benefit from studying in a research intensive, research excellent academic environment
  • Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated

Other

  • Contribute to the Business School Vision, Mission and Strategy
  • Operate as an active citizen in the Economics and Business School community
  • To have a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and ethics, responsibility and sustainability
  • Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching
  • Take responsibility for a defined management or administrative role such as Module Leader, Year Tutor, Degree Programme Director, Research Director, Outreach Co-ordinator
  • Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees

 

The Person 

 

The level of appointment will be determined by your ability to meet the requirements of the person specification as outlined below.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Lecturer Grade F

  • Evidence or the potential to provide an outstanding educational experience, rooted in strong disciplinary knowledge that engages, challenges, and inspires our students
  • Ability to deliver research-led teaching, making effective use of technology to enhance learning
  • Evidence or potential for internationalising the curricula
  • Ability to engage with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research
  • Evidence of engaging in scholarly research and activities
  • Ability to supervise PGR students
  • Ability to supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills
  • Demonstration of successful team working
  • Personal resilience in a context of change and fast paced environment
  • Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and to ethics, responsibility and sustainability

Lecturer Grade G

In addition to providing evidence of your previous experience of the criteria above, to be considered for a Grade G Lectureship you must also meet the follow criteria:

  • Experience of attracting and supervising PGR students
  • Supervision of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects
  • Substantial experience of designing and delivering high quality teaching and learning material, resources and activities for students
  • Ability to undertake a management and leadership role

 

Qualifications

Lecturer Grade F

  • PhD (or equivalent) at or near completion (strictly within three months of submission at time of application) in a relevant subject

Desirable

  • HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience)

Lecturer Grade G

In addition to meeting the criteria for the Lecturer Grade F candidates must also meet the following criteria:

  • Completed PhD in a relevant subject
