The role

The School of Physics at the University of Bristol seeks an outstanding candidate for a permanent academic appointment within the astrophysics research theme. The appointment will be at the level of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor, depending on the experience of the appointee.

The successful candidate will carry out their own independent world-leading research programme, which will complement and extend the research currently carried out by the astrophysics research theme. This currently focusses on observational studies of galaxy and galaxy cluster evolution; the fueling of AGN and Galactic black holes and their interaction with the surrounding environment; the formation and evolution of planetary systems and the properties of exoplanet atmospheres; and the use of Data Science techniques to maximize the usefulness of large astrophysical data sets.

We particularly encourage applicants with significant plans to exploit new and near-future world-leading observing and/or computing facilities. Applications from excellent candidates with different areas of expertise and interests that will complement and extend the research in the astrophysics group in other ways are also very welcome.

    What will you be doing?

    The post-holder will be responsible for developing their own internationally leading, independent research programme and supervising postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students. The post-holder with take on teaching duties, both undergraduate and postgraduate, within the School of Physics, as required. They will also take on take on appropriate administrative duties within the School of Physics and the University, as required.

Applicants should possess a PhD in astronomy/astrophysics or related subject, have a strong publication record commensurate with their career stage, and demonstrate scientific influence and/or leadership in international collaborations.
