Job Purpose

To make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School/College through leading and contributing to research of international standard within the Materials and Condensed Matter Physics (MCMP) research group, high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, securing research funding, and providing academic leadership and management within the School/College. To actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach. The successful candidate will be expected to lead a research programme that complements the MCMP group’s existing interests in functional materials and magnetism, preferably using transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. They will have an opportunity to assist in the commissioning and use of a unique, world leading scanning transmission electron microscope for materials science studies. Funding has recently been secured (United Kingdom Research and Innovation funding for £4.9M) and the instrument is planned to be installed in early 2026. At Grade 8 and 9, demonstrate leadership and contribute to academic and strategic management. Main Duties and Responsibilities Perform the following range of activities: 1. Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy. 2. Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact, complementing the MCMP group research interests. 3. Take a lead in major funding bids and related activities, including Knowledge Exchange, which develop and sustain support for the subject area and recognised excellence for the University. 4. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality course/programme administration, setting and monitoring standards and lead on the development of policy and practice across research and teaching teams [beyond subject/school level]. 5. Create and develop effective networks with students, staff across the University, and external stakeholders to oversee the embedding of key University priorities such as graduate attributes, professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support, student mobility and quality enhancement within credit bearing and non-credit bearing activities. 6. Develop a strategic approach to embedding learning technologies across the Subject/School and College to support and enhance course/programme delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment within campus based, blended and online provision. 7. Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development. 8. Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the subject specialism, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review and editorial processes. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the University externally. 9. Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School/College/University. 10. Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems. 11. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate. 12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School. 13. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together For appointment at Grade 9: 14. Demonstrate a distinctive contribution to the academic community through a leading role nationally and internationally eg shaping research agendas, advising review panels and funders. 15. To establish and maintain new research activity within the MCMP Research Group and enhance the research profile of the School of Physics and Astronomy, inter alia by conducting and developing first class research, producing first author and co-authored papers and upholding an expert reputation in his/her own subject area. 16. To lead and develop this high-quality research activity through a portfolio of individual, joint and/or network research programmes and secure the funding required to underpin the long-term growth of his/her activity through grant applications as appropriate in a world-class research-intensive university. 17. To interact with national and international Research Councils and similar bodies at an appropriate level, and engage, as appropriate, in the dissemination of advanced research through commercialisation, technology transfer, outreach etc. For appointment at Reader: 18. Excel in generation of research, outputs, funding, supervision, and knowledge exchange/impact. Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/Qualifications  Essential: A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] or equivalent in related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the discipline/subject area.A2 Significant breadth/depth of knowledge in materials physics.A3 A growing international reputation, evidenced by esteem indicators, in a field that matches or enhances existing activities within the MCMP Group. The candidate should have active interests in the use and development of transmission electron microscopy for materials science and/or be willing to incorporate and support such microscopy as an integral part of their research. For appointment at Grade 9/Reader: A4 An extensive and established international reputation in research and/or teaching within Materials Physics. Skills Essential: C1 Recognised expertise in materials physics to allow development of new knowledge and understanding within the field.C2 Sustained engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.C3 Engagement with the current and future priorities and the aims and ambitions of the Materials and Condensed Matter Physics group and the University/College/Service strategies.C4 Ability to plan and lead staff and efficiently deploy resources in support of major research and teaching activities.C5 Ability to disseminate conceptual and complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences to promote understanding.C6 Ability to undertake academic leadership of groups/activities with substantial impact on finance and other resources.C7 Ability to forge new and effective relationships with colleagues, internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institutions.C8 Ability to demonstrate independent thought in order to generate original research and secure research income.C9 Ability to teach solid state physics at final year honours degree level. Experience  Essential: E1 Developing track record of published research of international standard compatible with enhancing the School’s submission to the United Kingdom’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise for assessing quality of research in higher education institutes.E2 Established track record of successfully securing funding for research purposes or travel, as appropriate for the subject specialism and candidate experience.E3 Internationally developing reputation in field complementary to that of the MCMP Group.E4 Some experience of undergraduate teaching and project supervision as appropriate for the candidate’s career stage. For appointment at Grade 9/Reader: E5 Evidence the above criteria to a higher degree, particularly in generation of research, outputs, funding, supervision, and knowledge exchange/impact.E6 Internationally recognised excellence and reputation in subject area.E7 Proven track record of developing and devising teaching programmes, techniques and methods.E8 Track record of student supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of early career academic colleagues in subject area/team. Desirable: F1 Track record of scholarship of teaching in the discipline. Terms and Conditions Salary will be Grade 7/8/9 £39,347- £44,263 / £48,350 - £56,021 / £57,969 - £64,941 per annum.
