PhD "Mathematical modeling of circular economy, applied to mobile lifecycle"

Publicerad 2024-06-19

about the role

Your role is to carry out a PhD on "Mathematical modeling of circular economy, applied to mobile lifecycle"

Global context and problem of the subject
Reconditioning and recycling are drivers of ecological transition and new economic models. Recent regulatory changes encourage actors, including Orange, to increase the proportion of reconditioned products in their offerings. However, theoretical results show that the combination of a perfect circular economy (the model assumes, among other things, the resale of a device for material recovery and production of new devices without additional exploitation of natural resources) and technological progress could have indirect negative effects, despite the beneficial effects of each of these actions. In general, it is relevant to consider how to design this system to be as virtuous as possible. The objective of this thesis is to understand and quantify these phenomena.

Scientific objective - results and challenges to be overcome

The objective of the thesis is to provide methodological tools for mathematical modeling (theoretical results and algorithmic modules) to facilitate the implementation of the circular economy in a broad sense, with a focus on the mobile industry. The aim is to identify actions that can minimize the environmental footprint of this market. Currently, there is limited quantitative research conducted on this subject.

The main challenges to address are:

  • Modeling a complex system with feedback loops.
  • Analytical resolution whenever possible.
  • Building a dynamic model and solving it using optimal control methods.
  • Constructing a game model that considers multiple decision-makers and identifying equilibria.
  • about you

Skills (scientific and technical) and personal qualities required for the position:

  • Strong expertise in mathematics
  • Competence in applied mathematics, particularly in the following Artificial Intelligence areas: Operations Research, Optimal control, Game Theory,
  • Knowledge of circular economy is a plus,
  • Proficiency in programming (Python),
  • Good level in English is necessary,
  • The candidate must demonstrate good autonomy, curiosity, and strong initiative.
  • Required Education (Master's degree, engineering degree, PhD, scientific and technical ):

  • Engineering degree or Master's degree in Applied Mathematics and Decisional Computer Science.
  • additional information

Within the Networks department of Orange Innovation, you will be part of a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment consisting of experts and researchers in applied mathematics (Operations Research, Artificial Intelligence, Game Theory), network (radio technologies), and energy domains (technical environment).

You will contribute to providing mathematical and algorithmic tools based on state-of-the-art mathematical methods to address a key strategic issue for the Orange group.

You will work on a crucial topic in today's world and strive to make these markets as environmentally virtuous as possible.

You will have the opportunity to showcase your research through scientific communications in conferences or international journals, as well as internally within the Orange Group, with possible interactions with those responsible for analyzing real auctions in France or other subsidiaries internationally.
