Background

UK Rare Disease Research Platform was established in 2023 with a £14 million investment from the NIHR and the MRC. Eleven nodes have been funded; the Ethical Legal Social Issues - ELSI Node includes three projects led by the University of Manchester, University of Oxford,and Cardiff University.

The Manchester team is focusing on exploring the Impact and Outcomes in Rare Conditions Clinical Trials. We aim to develop capacity and methodology for establishing a meaningful set of core outcomes that capture the needs of patients and family members, for use in research and policy decision making. We are working to include and reflect the patient experience so that those intended to benefit from the research have the opportunity to influence its direction.

Overall Purpose of the Job

We are seeking a flexible, enthusiastic person to join the Manchester MRC/NIHR ELSI Node project team. The post holder will undertake and support patient-facing research.

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a keen researcher with clinical/ clinical research experience, experience of qualitative research and of working with patients or vulnerable/marginalized individuals to work on a project of international significance. The post holder will play an important role in delivery of this project. You will also have the opportunity to co-supervise Master’s Student research.

The post holder will work with project leads, partners and project managers to deliver study objectives. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: conducting research interviews with patient and non-patient participants; analysing qualitative and quantitative data; working with clinical teams to ascertain patients for studies and promoting study participation; collection of patient data; applying for and maintaining research ethics approvals.

The post holder will hold a postgraduate qualification in Genetic/Genomic Counselling, Genomic Medicine, Nursing, Psychology, Medical Sociology or Social Sciences, and have experience working with patients or vulnerable/marginalised people. Holding, or being close to completion, of a relevant a PhD/DPhil is desirable.

This is a full-time appointment on a fixed term contract for 2 years, funded by the MRC/NIHR. A part-time appointment will be considered. You will be based at the University of Manchester. A hybrid working arrangement is possible.
