Research Associate in Power Electronics

Publicerad 2024-11-15

The Energy and Power Division, based in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, specialises in power electronic and electromagnetic energy conversion for a range of transport and renewable energy applications, including the control and management of large-scale power networks. The Division consists of over 100 researchers including more than 20 academics. A key theme of the power electronics research is the application of emerging wide-bandgap power devices (SiC and GaN) to transform converter performance, particularly for transport electrification. The Division has extensive laboratory facilities that enable high-voltage experiments up to 1 MV, and high-power testing (at low voltage) with power levels approaching 1 MW. The laboratories include dynamometer test rigs (up to 15,000 rpm), cryogenic systems for low temperature / superconducting experiments, regulated power supplies (up to 100 kW), battery test systems, environmental chambers and a six-rack, real-time digital grid simulator (RTDS). High-performance measurement and instrumentation systems include high current / voltage wide-bandwith probes, oscilloscopes, and power, network and impedance analysers.

The University of Manchester lies in the heart of Manchester and has been created by bringing together the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST, two of Britain’s most distinguished universities, to create a powerful new force in higher education. The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has over 70 academic staff, and is one of the largest departments of this type in the country, a particular strength being power engineering. The Department is housed in the recently-built Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD). A £400m facility which brings together the engineering and material science departments at Manchester within one building. In the last Research Excellence Framework, REF2021, (an independent assessment of university research covering the period 2014-2021) the School of Engineering was ranked second for research power in the UK.
