Research Engineer in surface product characterization

Publicerad 2024-04-11

ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steel producer. We use the most innovative technology to create the steels tomorrow’s world will be made of. Every day over 190,000 of our talented people, located in over 60 countries, push the boundaries of digitalization and use advanced technology to create a world that is stronger, faster and smarter. To help make this possible, they know they can depend on the support and training that a company of our scope and scale can provide.

ArcelorMittal Maizieres Research is the worldwide largest research center of ArcelorMittal company. The campus is composed with 4 labs dedicated to specific areas: Product, Process, Bars& Wires, Pilote. The job is proposed in the Digital Technologies cluster, part of the Process lab. The mission of the cluster is to develop digital and cyber-physics (based on sensors and data science) solutions for process control and optimization in one hand and product control on the other hand. About 40 people, apprentices, technicians, engineers, researchers are working in this cluster. Non contact temperature measurement and surface analysis are very important, directly linked to the digitalization transformation (industry 4.0) and the decarbonization programs of ArcelorMittal company.

Your role

The main mission of the job is to develop new solutions for product characterization (mainly steel product surfaces with coating) and to integrate it in industrial facilities. A specific focus will be put on technologies based on spectral and hyperspectral approaches, so one important part of the job is to make the link between surface physics and chemistry, the response of spectral sensors.

The research engineer will be involved in several research activities in which he/she will have the responsibility to:

  • Make the link between the industrial objectives and the physical phenomena to be monitored,
  • Imagine and propose new solutions in the field of surface characterization,
  • Interact with academic laboratories and hardware suppliers to enhance our competencies in the field of spectral and hyperspectral solution integration and more generally optical solution.

Non contact temperature domain will be a second important axis, based on infrared technique we will propose advanced temperature measurement sometimes based on spectral approach.

The researcher will work in very close partnership with all teams in the Digital Technologies cluster, but also with interlocutors involved in all ArcelorMittal research areas (metallurgy and product development, process improvement) and more generally with plants located worldwide in the ArcelorMittal perimeter.

We are specifically looking for a candidate who can work with a team of researchers exploring a wide range of solutions combining surface characterization and temperature measurement with embedded and desktop software components.
More broadly, the chosen candidate will have access to testing facilities, laboratory in development projects or technical assistance activities.

Your profile

  • Engineer degree, Master degree or PhD in relevant discipline : spectroscopy, surface characterization, infrared....
  • A first professional experience is not required but could be valuable, more specifically in research and development.
  • Knowledge / Experience in a spectroscopy, spectral analysis, data acquisition and processing.
  • Knowledge / Experience in a programming language such as Python.
  • Innovative, curious and results oriented
  • Ability to run laboratory experiments as well as trials in industrial plant context
  • Excellent social skills to work in project teams within a multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to travel worldwide
  • Fluent in English, French would be a plus
