Job summary

The post holder will have a vital role in the delivery of a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded research project, GOTHIC2: A multi-centre randomised placebo-controlled trial of glycopyrrolate and hyoscine hydrobromide for the treatment of clozapine-induced hypersalivation, at GMMH.

The post holder will travel to mental health clinics throughout Greater Manchester to discuss the GOTHIC2 trial with community mental health service users, and recruit patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The post holder will collect data for the project in the clinic or participant homes, involving the CANTAB battery, PANSS and a range of other measures. Full training will be provided. Maintaining good working relationships with service users, carers, clinic staff and other stakeholders will be key to the success of the project. The successful candidate should be organised, capable of independent work, with strong interpersonal skills and a good awareness of mental health difficulties.

The post holder will work collaboratively, and be supported by, the study Principal Investigator and the research team, research and delivery staff and clinical services to assist with the successful delivery of the study and achievement of local targets in relation to research performance.

The post is funded for FTE over 42 months, and options for working hours and flexible working can be discussed.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist with the smooth day-to-day running and completion of this research project by supporting the project manager and the PI
  • To assist in the recruitment of participants to assess the eligibility of potential participants
  • To explain clearly and in detail the study to participants and to answer their queries regarding the research
  • To monitor blinding procedures and ensure blinding is maintained
  • To adhere to the service specification and quality standards of NHS trust policies, particularly relating to confidentiality and risk, and to also oversee programme policies in relation to confidentiality and risk
  • To ensure that ethics procedures and HRA/ R and I governance procedures are followed.
  • To assist in the preparation of Powerpoint presentations

    Job responsibilities

    Data collection and management To contribute towards the accurate collection, entry and management of data using Excel To be responsible for the safe keeping of data files including medical notes To assist with the analysis (qualitative and quantitative) and interpretation of the results of the research if required To provide suitable results tables, graphs and figures.

    Planning, management and other duties To form and maintain close working relationships with other members of the research team and to liaise with University and NHS staff as required To assist with the promotion of the research to staff, service users and other relevant stakeholders To liaise with research colleagues and support administrative staff on routine matters To participate in regular supervision To identify appropriate training to support professional development To act in a professional manner and with appropriate behaviour at all times To undertake specific administrative duties as required To act under the guidance of the project manager to ensure that daily tasks and ongoing workloads are prioritised and completed within agreed timeframes To help the research team achieve research objective and deadlines To report any concerns raised by study participants to the project manager/PI To continue to update knowledge and develop skills To provide advice or demonstrate own research activities or workplace routines to new research staff, temporary researchers or students assisting with the project To support Project Manager and PI as required To undertake any other duties, which may be required from time to time.

    Education

    Essential

  • Good Honours Degree in Psychology (2:1 or above) and a Masters Degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience

  • Experience of conducting quantitative research (including checking the scoring of measures, data collection, data input, and data analysis) for a stand-alone study, such as a Masters or PhD thesis or part of a funded study/trial
