The Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University ranks 3rd in the world, according to the 2024 QS World University Rankings, and consists of a vibrant, supportive community of scholars.

The Department seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher Associate in the Psycholinguistics/Cognitive Neuroscience of Bi-/Multilingualism to work full time for 24 months. The postdoctoral researcher will work primarily with the Psycholinguistics/Cognitive Neuroscience team led by Prof. Jason Rothman and Prof. Patrick Rebuschat. Topics covered in the group’s research programs are broad and we are especially interested in applicants whose interests and expertise relate to cognitive approaches to bi-/multilingual language acquisition and processing across the lifespan, the cognitive and neural effects of (degree of) bi-/multilingualism engagement over the lifespan, especially related to healthy aging and/or aging with neurodegeneration.

You will have a PhD in Linguistics or a related area, a track-record of conference presentations and publications commensurate with your career stage, and experience with psycho-/neurolinguistic /neuroscientific methodologies and analysis: working with EEG (resting state, ERP and/or TFR) is highly desirable. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team that includes academics from the Departments of Linguistics & English Language, Psychology and others across campus as appropriate, e.g., the Institute for Health Research.

You will design empirical studies on language acquisition/learning, linguistic processing, executive functioning and/or brain structure and function, potentially at the at the cross-roads of some or all of the aforementioned areas, in an effort to better understand the mechanisms of bi-/multilingualism, test theoretical claims and build bridges between cognitive neuroscience and linguistics.
