THE FULBRIGHT HILDEMAN FELLOWSHIP IN SCANDINAVIAN AREA STUDIES 

at North Park University 

Chicago, Illinois 

January-May 2026

The Fulbright Commission will award the 2025-2026 Hildeman Fellowship to teach at North Park University in Chicago, Illinois during the spring semester 2026.  

The School of Music, Art, and Theatre, the Center for Scandinavian Studies, and the  Department of Scandinavian Studies is seeking a dynamic Swedish scholar/artist  with experience in any of the following areas through the pedagogical practice of  Music, Art, or Theatre: Belonging and Creation through Swedish cultural lens,  Scandinavian Art/Music and Art/Music History, Comparative Indigenous Studies, Folk Music/Art, Improvisational Music/Art creation, Nordic storytelling. An interdisciplinary  approach is greatly appreciated.  

The Hildeman Fellow will: 

  • Teach one interdisciplinary undergraduate-level topics course (in English)  (10-25 students.) 
  • Give a public lecture and performance or exhibition on a topic related to the  area of expertise. 
  • Informally or formally advise/mentor/teach a small number of students with  interest in the area of expertise. Potential applied instructor. 
  • Be in residence the entire spring term (January-May 2026). 

Once the Fellow is selected, they will work closely with department faculty to design  the course. The successful candidate will have opportunities to engage across the university campus with potential interdisciplinary and interdepartmental  opportunities. 

Endowed by the Hugo A. Anderson Chair in Scandinavian Studies in 1982 and created  in 1984, the Center for Scandinavian Studies (CSS) at North Park University has firmly  established itself as a major focal point for Scandinavian academic and cultural  interests in Chicago. The CSS sponsors visiting professors, lectures, concerts, and  exhibits, bringing many talented and accomplished Scandinavians to the city of  Chicago.The programs of the School of Music, Art, and Theatre offer challenging  curricula enriched by the diversity of voices throughout history and cultures. We  prepare students for creative practice now and into the future: artists who are global  citizens equipped for the changing professions of the 21st century. As an artistic  community of students, faculty, and staff, we seek to increase awareness of civic  responsibility and promote a culture of compassion through the intersection of faith  and learning.

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: 

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent 
  • Swedish citizenship 
  • Fluency in English 
  • Demonstrated university teaching experience 

Persons in Sweden having dual citizenship with the United States or holding permanent  residence in the United States are not eligible to apply for Fulbright grants. 

FELLOWSHIP BENEFITS: 

  • Cash grant of SEK 150 000 
  • Round-trip travel between Sweden and the United States  
  • Sickness and accident insurance 
  • Access to a studio space (art/music) 
  • Up to $1000 for research and/or conference travel
