We are seeking a current student who can act as a liaison between students and the Graduate School. As an ombudstudent, you represent fellow students by bringing forward concerns, ideas, and feedback to the GSC, helping strengthen communication and improving the overall student experience.
Are you eager to contribute to a more connected and supportive academic community? We encourage you to apply for the ombudstudent position at the GSC. In this role, your efforts can make a meaningful difference while allowing you to further develop your interpersonal and communication skills.
What are you going to do
The ombudsstudent is someone who stands in the middle of UvA student life and is able to build good connections with fellow students. You will:
- Issue requested and unsolicited advice regarding student interests to the Graduate School management;
- Gather student wishes and complaints and talk to study associations and the Faculty Student Council;
- Assemble and lead the group of student representatives;
- Participate in GSC meetings and be present during meetings of the Educational Committee (OC) and the Board of Studies;
- Facilitating focus groups at the end of semester 1 in cooperation with the policy advisers;
- Possibly helping the Graduate School organisationally or administratively with ad-hoc projects such as alumni surveys, graduation ceremonies, career events and introduction days.
What do you have to offer
You are enrolled as student at the Graduate School of Communication. A successful ombudsstudent understands that you have a double role: you are a point of contact for students, while also working closely with the Graduate School. You listen to feedback and concerns from students and make sure these are shared in a clear and responsible way within the GSC.
You communicate clearly and simply, both in writing and in conversation. You know when to follow up on issues, who to involve, and how to handle sensitive information with care and confidentiality. You are able to see different sides of a situation and translate what you hear from students into useful feedback for the Graduate School. At the same time, you stay in touch with the student community and help improve processes based on what you notice and hear.
An understanding of Dutch is a plus, but not a prerequisite for this position.
What else do we offer you
The position concerns (temporary) employment of 8 hours per week. The initial employment is for one year. Following a positive assessment and barring altered circumstances.
Depending on your experience, the minimum salary is €3084 and the maximum salary is €3141 gross per month based on a 38-hour working week, as per the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.
We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. The UvA offers excellent possibilities for further professional development and education.
In this department, you will work
The GSC is responsible for the education within the Master’s in Communication Science (four tracks), the Research Master’s in Communication Science and the Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Journalism, Media and Globalisation at the University of Amsterdam. You will join a friendly and open team where people work together and support each other. We value your ideas and encourage you to take initiative and share your input.
Within Communication Science, you will work in an international academic environment in the heart of Amsterdam. You will mainly collaborate with other student assistants from the Communication and Events team, study advisors, policy advisors, and the GSC director on shared goals in education and support. This is a great opportunity to see how education works behind the scenes.
You can plan your hours flexibly, but we expect you to be in the office once per week for part of the day.
The Graduate School of Communication (GSC) is looking for an enthusiastic, proactive, and involved ombudstudent for the coming academic year.
