Main duties of the job

Specific duties include:-

Development and implementation of novel clinical computer software devices, applications and models within the relevant quality and legislative frameworks.

Application of data science methods for the orchestration and analysis of clinical datasets, medical images and the results of computer simulations.

Evaluation, configuration and commissioning of computerised healthcare technology.

Working with academics, other scientists and clinicians, participating in multi-disciplinary research activity.

Training others in the field of Scientific Computing

The successful applicant will take a leading scientific computing role within Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering working on projects that might relate to radiotherapy, radiation protection, CT and X-Ray based radiology, nuclear medicine, MRI, renal technology, rehabilitation engineering or the deployment and management of biomedical equipment. The role also includes research opportunities in AI and Deep Learning.

The successful applicant will have excellent software development andor data science knowledge and skills backed up with relevant experience of practice in a clinical or medical setting. Ideally they will be registered as a healthcare scientist, a clinical technologist, or a healthcare science practitioner. Unregistered applicants may be appointed where a development plan is established that will lead to registration. If the successful applicant is currently part of the Scientist Training Scheme, the start date can be delayed until the end of the scheme.

  • Master level qualification in bioinformatics, computing, medical physics or clinical engineering or an equivalent qualification backed up with relevant experience working in the field.
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist or Clinical Technologist or equivalent level of professional standing ( other HCPC regulated profession, MIPEM, MIoP, MIET, MBCS, AHCS registered, etc.)
  • Desirable

  • Formal training in computer programming; data/computer modelling; data science methods.

  • Extensive, highly developed computing skills with advanced workmanship standards and skills in design & development.
  • Complex problem solving and initiative when dealing with issues within own specialist area of competence.

  • A high level of knowledge backed up with experience working on scientific computer software development and/or data science.
  • Specialist knowledge of bioinformatics techniques, methods and practices.
  • Specialist knowledge in the management, implementation and use of computerised healthcare technology including an understanding of DICOM and HL7 communication protocols.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards including ISO 13485; ISO 14971; ISO9001; ISO 27001; IEC 80001; DCB0129; DCB0160.
  • Knowledge and experience of using formal research methods.
  • Desirable

  • Experience in the design and development of medical device software.
  • Knowledge of clinical process, and experience of working in clinical teams.
