Job Purpose

To provide teaching capacity and to carry out high-quality research in the area of fish health, complementing existing strength in fish ecology, evolution and physiology within the School, and contribute to our growing research portfolio around aquaculture. To make a major contribution to developing and delivering engaging new programmes, courses and modules on fish disease, pathology and diagnostics, to be offered at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, including externally and in partnership with other academic institutions. The successful candidate would have extensive knowledge and expertise in relation to fish health in the context of aquaculture in Scotland/northern Europe and ideally would have experience of working in this industry. The candidate would be expected to join and contribute to interdisciplinary teams and develop a portfolio of securing external funding, publishing in high-impact research findings in peer-reviewed journals and supervise research students and staff. Research interests could include, but are not limited to, the development and validation of new diagnostic tools and approaches in fish health and experimental work aimed at gaining a mechanistic understanding of disease pathology and fish welfare. The successful candidate might also be asked, in collaboration with the Named Veterinary Surgeons, to provide expert advice and guidance regarding the diagnosis, management, and control of fish disease within the College’s animal research facilities. The position will come with opportunities to engage in consultancy, which is managed by a new University of Glasgow policy () and encouraged for up to 30 days per year. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. To develop a portfolio of high-quality research activity as evidenced by publications and appropriate levels of external funding in fish health.2. To supervise and mentor undergraduate and post-graduate research students.3. To develop research networks to build critical mass in relevant research area.4. To participate in the teaching of theoretical and practical skills in fish diseases, pathology and diagnostics.5. To take responsibility for the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage in the examination process as appropriate and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.6. To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, particularly regarding fish health and production, in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning.7. To undertake administrative duties as requested by the Head of School and to lead specific initiatives to enhance the research environment and learning experience.8. To participate in quality assurance and enhancement activities, curriculum review and programme re-accreditation with the University and professional bodies to ensure high quality education provision is maintained.9. To participate in the Advisor of Studies (student mentorship) Programme and assist students with difficulties.10. To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile and innovation strategy in line with University, College and School objectives. Knowledge/Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/Qualifications Essential: A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] or specific MSc in Fish Health and/or Aquaculture plus equivalent clinical/research training in a relevant subject area.A2 Experience in teaching and assessment portfolio in veterinary education or extensive experience in clinical practice. Desirable: B1 Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.B2 Veterinary degree, registered with the RCVS before commencing employment. Skills Essential: C1 Expertise and clinical competence regarding fish health, diagnostics and pathology in relation species relevant to Scottish aquaculture (e.g. salmonids).C2 Excellent communications skills, both orally and written.C3 High quality outputs in a relevant subject areaC4 Enthusiasm for high-quality researchC5 Enthusiasm and ability for teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.C6 Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.C7 Time, project and people management skills.C8 Ability to supervise and direct technical staff in the support of research and teaching activities.C9 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.C10 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.C11 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly. Terms and Conditions Salary will be Grade 7/8, £39,347 - £44,263/ £48,350 - £56,021 per annum. This post is full time and open ended.
