The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies (LiFTS) was one of the foundational departments in the University of Essex and is an exciting, interdisciplinary department, where theory and practice across a range of disciplines from creative writing to theatre, literature, filmmaking and journalism thrive alongside each other.
Literature was one of the founding subjects at the University of Essex. With strengths in American (Caribbean and US), postcolonial, comparative and world literature(s) from the Early Modern to the contemporary period, LiFTS offers a dynamic and broad literature provision.
Duties of the Role
The postholder will be expected to teach literature at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to have specialisms in the areas of American (Caribbean and US) literature and/or comparative and postcolonial literatures. The candidate will be required to lecture and lead seminars in both introductory first-year undergraduate and postgraduate modules.

Skills and qualifications required
The successful candidate will have substantial experience of teaching literature at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, with a relevant doctoral level degree in Literature or English or equivalent professional experience or practice.
The postholder will also have some experience of designing and planning of learning activities, developing effective learning environments and approaches to student support and guidance. The candidate will be expected to show an ability and willingness to complement and continuously enhance the Department’s education strengths and areas of expertise. The candidate will also demonstrate commitment to respect individual learners and diverse learning communities and to promote participation and equality of opportunity for all learners via student-centred practice.
