PhD position on the Development of a multi-scale damage model of hydrogen storage tanks - CDD 36 mois à IMT Nord Europe

Publicerad 2024-04-25

Discipline: Computational mechanics

Line Manager:Dmytro VASIUKOV

Workplace: Douai, Research Centre (cite Lahure)

Type of contract and duration: PhD thesis, 36 months

CONTEXT:

Public establishment belonging to IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom), placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, IMT Nord Europe has three main objectives: providing our students with ethically responsible engineering practice enabling them to solve 21st century issues, carrying out our R&D activities leading to outstanding innovations and supporting territorial development through innovation and entrepreneurship. Ideally positioned at the heart of Europe, 1 hour away from Paris, 30 min from Brussels and 1h30 from London, IMT Nord Europe has strong ambitions to become a main actor of the current industrial transitions, digital and environmental, by combining education and research on engineering and digital technologies.

Located on two main campuses dedicated to research and education in Douai and Lille, IMT Nord Europe offers research facilities of almost 20,000m² in the following areas:

- Digital science,

- Processes for industry and services,

- Energy and Environment,

- Materials and Processes.

The position is vacant within the Centre for Materials & Processes where about 100 research staffs (including 35 faculty members) are performing scientific researches, cover different research fields about non-metallic materials (polymers, composites, cement and concrete, minerals, sediment) and their manufacturing processes, such as the development of advanced materials and processing technologies, circular economy and eco-materials, digital engineering ( ).

BRIEF:

Hydrogen based energy is an important pillar to meet future energy demands in a renewable and sustainable manner. The EU-project ECOHYDRO that will start in 2024 targets the reduction of whole lifetime costs of hydrogen storage technologies, the development of environmentally sustainable and circular storage systems, all the while ensuring the safety of the innovative hydrogen storage technologies, through the development of filament wound composite hydrogen storage tanks using high strength carbon fibres, low viscosity thermoplastic liquid resin and instant in-situ photopolymerization.

Within this project, involving 15 industrial and academic partners, this PhD will focus on the development of a multi-scale model for hydrogen storage tanks. Other partners of the ECOHYDRO project will integrate sensors into the tanks to locally monitor strains, temperatures, etc. The PhD student will develop a multi-scale model based on image-based observations (micro CT) to predict the mechanical performance of the storage, considering variations in the micro-structure due to processes such as fiber defects (misalignment, clustering, etc.), resin defects (porosity, residual stresses, etc.), and the possible presence of integrated sensors.

This PhD is jointly supervised by IMT Nord Europe (France) and KU Leuven (Belgium). The research supervision team consist of Professors Vasiukov from IMT Nord Europe and Ivens and Lomov from KU Leuven. The research activities during the three-year PhD will be executed at both universities on a 50-50 basis. Participation in teaching activities in mechanical engineering is possible up to a limit of 64 hours per school year for students who wish to pursue a career in academia. This position offers:

  • A high-level and exciting international research environment in a renowned institution
  • Being part of an international project team with a multitude of contacts in Europe and worldwide
  • A PhD title after approximately three years of successful research
  • A thorough interdisciplinary scientific education in the frame of a doctoral training program
  • An EU-funded PhD grant
  • The possibility to participate in local as well as international courses, workshops and conferences
  • Participation in teaching activities
  • REQUIRED PROFILE:

  • A master’s (or equivalent) degree in materials science and engineering, computational mechanics, applied mathematics, or computer science
  • Distinguished student, with special attention to research projects, master thesis and modeling courses
  • Some skills in programming
  • Knowledge in mechanics of composite and polymer materials will be an advantage
  • Strong knowledge of English, some knowledge of French will be an advantage
  • An open-minded attitude
  • Team player, as she or he will be part the Centre for Materials & Processes of IMT Nord Europe and the research team of the ECOHYDRO project
