Main duties and responsibilities

To make significant contribution to the leadership of research in the department, including gaining research funding awards as Principal Investigator, the development of the research environment in the department and across the University and publishing in peer-reviewed journal articles and other internationally excellent or world-leading publications in education. As a member of the senior academic staff within the School, the postholder will be responsible and accountable to the Head of Department (or other managers e.g., Dean, Deputy Dean or Associate Dean) for all duties including day-to-day learning and teaching, research, enterprise and administrative activities. The appointee will be expected to undertake research and contribute to the development of, and supervise and teach on, doctoral programmes in one or more of the following subject areas of Materials Science/ Engineering:• Advanced Materials and Advanced Materials Processing• Materials for extreme environments• Strategic Materials• Materials recycling and life-cycle analysis (LCA)• Aperiodic lattice structures• Additive Manufacturing Skills and experience required The successful candidate will have a professional track record in Materials Science / Engineeringand expertise and experience of teaching and assessing modules in the following Materials Science / Engineering subject areas:• Materials properties (strength, creep, fatigue, corrosion, etc.)• Strengthening mechanisms• Materials processing (forming and joining processes)• Automotive and Aerospace Materials Good interpersonal and presentation skills with proficiency in the English Language are essential with the ability to manage conflicting demands and work to deadlines Qualifications required First Degree and a PhD or equivalents in an appropriate area of Materials Science / Engineering or an equivalent, relevant postgraduate professional qualification, plus Fellowship of Advance HE Please view the job description and person specification for a full list of the duties and essential criteria. *An appointment to this role may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.* Applications must consist of a full CV and a synopsis, of not less than 1,000 and not more than 2,000 words of the candidate’s achievements, professional standing and future plans in their chosen field of endeavour, making specific reference to the criteria: i. contribution by research, learning and teaching, enterprise and entrepreneurship, to the furtherance of knowledge, advancements of the subject or their application to society.ii standing in the subject or profession;iii their academic leadership. As this is a readership appointment the names and contact details of three academic referees of appropriate standing in the field are required, who may be approached by the University prior to interview. If you are successful and offered the position a further reference will be required as regards your previous employment. The Appointment Panel for the post will be constituted in such a way that if the successful candidate fulfils the University's Readership criteria, then the Panel may award a Reader title to the successful applicant. The Reader title is a 4 year tenured appointment.
