Overview

The School of Psychology and Sport Science houses two of Bangor University’s high performing departments: the Department of Psychology, and the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Our world-leading research spans cognitive neuroscience, clinical interventions, psychological wellbeing, elite performance, physical activity, and health and applied human physiology. In the recent Research Excellence Framework Exercise, 86% of Psychology outputs were rated as either 3* or 4*. The Department of Psychology was also ranked 17th in the UK for the societal impact of its research. Our research-inspired teaching is led by a well-established teaching team, comprising of PhD qualified academics with a focus on teaching, learning, student care and the student experience. The team, which includes two National Teaching Fellows and staff accredited by Advance HE from Fellow to Principal Fellow, lead on pedagogic innovations within the School. The curricula include a wide portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and offers a clear and progressive ‘pathway’ model of education to enable students to travel from undergraduate studies through to the postgraduate opportunities which will make them competitive in a wide range of professional contexts (from Masters, PhD, to DClinPsy, to a multitude of graduate careers). Our programmes are regularly ranked amongst the top ten in the UK in the National Student Satisfaction Survey, and together with our research, ensures a vibrant learning experience with academics who have an international reputation in their specialist area. School/Unit

The new post graduate certificate and postgraduate diploma in CBT will sit alongside the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme, the new MSc CAAPs programme (commencing September 25) and the PG Diploma in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. All of these programmes are overseen by the Programme Director of the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme, which is a collaborative venture between Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) and Bangor University. The School of Psychology has been running level 7 CBT modules in close collaboration with Betsi Cadwaldr University Health Board for almost 10 years. BCUHB has a well-developed Psychological Therapies Training Team, staff from which will jointly deliver the programmes. These staff are accredited CBT therapists, supervisors and trainers who have extensive teaching experience and have developed a supervisory network. The PG Cert will have 13 students each year and the PG Dip 8 students.

Purpose of the Job

The main purpose of the job is to lead on the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in CBT, ensuring a vibrant and effective learning experience and liaising effectively with key stakeholders.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Specific Duties:

  • To manage the input into the Programme from the Psychological Therapies Training Team.
  • To lead programme development through ongoing active involvement in Committees and Working Parties and ongoing liaison with stakeholders.
  • To ensure that the programmes meet the requirements for accreditation with BABCP at level 1 (PG Cert) and Level 2 (PG Dip).
  • To lead on the development of the curriculum within the subject area and to contribute to the maintenance and development of existing modules and awards and develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches.
  • To work to enhance existing schemes/courses, and to develop new areas, including new modules or courses as appropriate.
  • To reflect on academic practice including the development of teaching materials and/or methods of approach and delivery.
  • To develop learning platforms, including the use of the University’s virtual learning environments according to the needs of the student group.
  • To utilise effective assessment instruments and ensure adequate and timely feedback to students is provided.
  • To engage with the University quality assessment review process (e.g. subject review, module evaluation, programme review).
  • To communicate effectively with colleagues and students through internal networks, and the sharing of ideas and information.
  • To liaise effectively with external partners such as professional bodies and placement providers.
  • To act as a mentor to less experienced staff.
  • To participate in professional duties including recruitment activities as appropriate.
  • To undertake appropriate levels of pastoral care for students.
  • To undertake continuous personal and professional development which ensures full fitness to practice in the role of programme lead in in this subject area.
  • To organise and chair meetings with students and supervisors, when concerns about competency development have been raised and to collaboratively develop action plans to address competency issues.
  • Ongoing responsibility for initiating and implementing policies within the Programmes which facilitate the development of high-quality training.
  • To be responsible for the on-going provision of supervisor training for new supervisors.
  • To act as examiner in the evaluation and assessment of student competence development.
  • To provide consultation to supervisors/services where expert opinion and advice on issues pertaining to training and/or clinical practice is required.
  • To engage in research and/or scholarly activity. This will include maintaining a personal research portfolio and/or demonstrating scholarly practice which enhances teaching in the subject area. This might also include leading collaborative projects, identifying sources of funding and securing grant allocations.
  • To maintain professional standards in relationships, including non-discriminatory practices, and to maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion.
  • To deal promptly, and with sensitivity and consideration, with individuals external to the University, members of the public, staff and students.
  • To teach CBT at postgraduate level on the DClinPsy programme including supervision of research projects.

  • Administrative and Wider Contribution duties will include:

    Qualifications/Experience/Knowledge

    Essential

  • PG Diploma in CBT or equivalent
  • Accredited CBT therapist with BABCP
  • Substantial post-qualification training in cognitive behavioural therapy.
  • Recognised higher education teaching qualification (PG Cert HE or THE) or membership of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). If neither of the above apply, applicants will be required to either: complete the PG Cert HE run by the University or become a member of the HEA (subject to its eligibility criteria)
  • Substantial knowledge and experience of practice in cognitive behavioural therapy, including in NHS settings.
  • Excellent knowledge of CBT and current developments in CBT practice
  • Knowledge of current policy developments relevant to the practice of CBT
  • Knowledge of equal opportunity and diversity issues relevant to curriculum design and development
  • Administrative and organisational or management experience, related to academic development or equivalent.
  • Experience of leading projects successfully.
