The role

This post offers an excellent opportunity for a Senior Research Associate or a Research Fellow to join a multi-disciplinary research team of mathematical modelers, epidemiologists and health economists based in Population Health Sciences at Bristol Medical School. The post-holder will contribute expertise in individual-based modelling to evaluate the impact and cost-effectiveness of interventions to prevent drug-related deaths in Scotland. The post is funded for 4 years in the first instance and will provide a valuable opportunity for obtaining research training and experience.


What will you be doing?

The post will involve leading mathematical modelling on EPHESUS (Evaluating the Public Health Impact of Interventions for the Prevention of Drug-related Deaths in the Population: in Scotland) - a newly funded 4-year NIHR Public Health Research (PHR) project. EPHESUS aims to evaluate the population-level impact of existing and novel interventions for the prevention of drug-related deaths in Scotland. The project combines a series of policy-relevant statistical analyses of linked health data with development of an individual based model that simulates trends in drug-related deaths and estimates impact and cost-effectiveness of interventions. You will be involved in the technical aspects of the modelling analyses. You will collaborate with other members of the team involved in this project, including statisticians (at Glasgow Caledonian University - GCU) leading the statistical analyses, health economists (GCU) undertaking cost estimation, and patient and public involvement (PPI) co-leads (Scottish Drugs Forum and University of Bristol). You will also be involved in dissemination of model findings with Public Health Scotland and other key stakeholders. There may also be the opportunity to collaborate on other projects which focus on infectious disease modelling or modelling of drug-related deaths in other settings. It is hoped that you will also start developing your own research portfolio through contributing to grant applications. 


You should apply if

We are looking for applicants with experience in mathematical modelling for public health. You must have experience of developing and coding up data-informed data dynamic models (using Matlab, R or similar), the ability to design and undertake modelling experiments involving data and uncertainty, and skills in undertaking epidemiological data analyses (using STATA, R or similar packages). You will have strong IT and communication skills and work effectively within a team environment that includes non-mathematicians.
